# FOMO and Panic Selling in Crypto: How to Avoid Both

To **avoid FOMO and panic selling** in crypto, decide your allocation, buying schedule and selling rules before prices move, then follow the written plan instead of headlines. FOMO pushes people to buy after big rallies; panic selling pushes them to sell after crashes. Both tend to cost investors part of the return their investments actually earned.

## What is FOMO in crypto?

FOMO, the fear of missing out, is the urge to buy because others seem to be getting rich. In crypto it is triggered by sudden price spikes, social-media posts showing gains, and friends talking about a coin you do not own. The US SEC notes that investors caught up in FOMO are often less sceptical of new opportunities, and the CFTC warns that fraudsters fake urgency precisely because the fear of losing out motivates people more than potential gains.

Signs you may be acting on FOMO: you are buying something you first heard about this week; you are adding to a position only because it has already risen sharply; you are using money set aside for bills; or you are considering borrowing or leverage to buy more.

## What is panic selling?

Panic selling is selling because a falling price has become frightening, not because anything about your reasons for owning the asset has changed. Behavioural research explains why it is so common. In their 1979 paper on prospect theory, Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky showed that people weigh losses more heavily than equivalent gains, so a 30% drop feels far worse than a 30% rise feels good. In a market that can fall that much in weeks, the urge to make the pain stop is strong.

## How much does emotional trading cost investors?

Morningstar measures the gap between what funds return and what the average dollar invested in them actually earns, which differs because of when investors buy and sell. Its 2025 study of US mutual funds and ETFs found:

| Measure (10 years to 31 Dec 2024) | Annual figure |
| --- | --- |
| Funds' total return | 8.2% |
| Average investor's return | 7.0% |
| Gap (about 15% of the funds' total return) | 1.2 percentage points |
| Gap for funds with the most volatile investor cash flows | 1.8 percentage points |
| Gap for funds with the most stable investor cash flows | 0.8 percentage points |

Source: Morningstar, Mind the Gap 2025 (data as of 31 Dec 2024). Figures cover US mutual funds and ETFs, not crypto.

Morningstar's summary is that the more investors traded, the less they made. No comparable study covers crypto, but crypto prices swing far more than most funds, which gives emotional timing more room to hurt.

## How can you avoid FOMO and panic selling?

- **Write the plan down first.** Record your goal, time horizon, the maximum share of your savings in crypto and the reasons you own each asset. Our guide to [setting investment goals](https://wealtii.com/learn/setting-investment-goals) gives a template.
- **Size positions for a crash.** Assume any crypto holding can fall by more than half. If that loss would force you to sell or change your life, the position is too large.
- **Buy on a schedule.** [Dollar-cost averaging](https://wealtii.com/learn/dollar-cost-averaging) means investing a fixed amount at fixed intervals, so price spikes stop being buying signals. A calendar reminder is enough if your platform has no recurring-purchase feature.
- **Set selling rules in advance.** Decide when you will rebalance or take profits, for example when crypto drifts five percentage points above its target share; see [when and how to take crypto profits](https://wealtii.com/learn/when-and-how-to-take-profits).
- **Add a cooling-off rule.** Wait 24 hours before any trade that is not in your plan, and write down why you want to make it.
- **Cut the noise.** Turn off price alerts, mute hype accounts, and treat sentiment gauges such as the [Crypto Fear & Greed Index](https://wealtii.com/learn/crypto-fear-and-greed-index) as a reminder of crowd mood, not a trading signal.

## What should you do during a crypto crash?

1. Reread your written plan before opening a trading app.
2. Ask whether anything has changed about why you bought, such as a hack, a broken peg or a failed project, as opposed to the price alone.
3. Check whether you need the money soon. If so, the position was probably too large; reduce it deliberately, not in one panicked trade.
4. Rebalance only if your preset limits have been crossed.
5. Avoid leverage and ignore anyone offering to "recover" losses for a fee.

Crashes also tempt people to sell everything and wait to buy back lower. Our guide on whether you [can time the crypto market](https://wealtii.com/learn/market-cycles-and-timing) looks at why that is harder than it sounds.

**Where Wealtii fits:** each Wealtii fund buys a fixed basket at set target weights, so one purchase spreads money across several holdings instead of one coin. The [Multi-Asset Balanced Allocation Fund](https://wealtii.com/funds/wealtii-multi-asset-balanced-allocation-fund), for example, holds tokenized gold, a tokenized silver ETF and a tokenized S&P 500 ETF alongside crypto, but it can still fall sharply. Wealtii has no automatic recurring purchases, so a dollar-cost-averaging plan means repeating a purchase yourself, from $10.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What does FOMO mean in crypto?

FOMO stands for fear of missing out: the anxiety of watching other people profit from a rising coin, which pushes investors to buy quickly, often after a large price rise and without research. Fraudsters deliberately exploit it with countdown timers and 'last chance' offers.

### Is it ever right to sell during a crash?

Yes, if your reason for owning the asset has changed, you need the money, or the position has grown beyond the share of your portfolio you planned. Selling because of fear alone, without one of those reasons, is what is usually meant by panic selling.

### Does dollar-cost averaging stop FOMO?

It reduces the pressure, because you invest a fixed amount on a fixed schedule whatever the price and never have to decide when to go all in. It does not prevent losses if prices fall over the whole period, and it only works if you keep to the schedule during downturns.

### How often should I check my crypto portfolio?

There is no fixed rule. Checking prices many times a day exposes you to every swing and makes impulsive trades more likely, so many long-term investors review their holdings monthly or quarterly against a written plan and rebalance only when allocations drift beyond preset limits.
