# Crypto Trends 2026: ETFs, Stablecoins & Tokenization

By [Zayd Ahmed](https://wealtii.com/editorial-policy#zayd-ahmed), Founder & CEO, Wealtii · Published 12 February 2026 · Last reviewed 21 October 2026

**The main crypto trends in 2026** are regulation catching up with the market, spot crypto ETFs beyond bitcoin and ether, fast-growing stablecoins and the tokenization of traditional assets such as Treasury bills, stocks and gold. On 21 October 2026, stablecoins in circulation totalled about $304 billion, according to DefiLlama.

| Measure | Value | Data source |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Stablecoins in circulation | About $304 billion | DefiLlama |
| Largest stablecoin (USDT) | About $183 billion | DefiLlama |
| Tokenized US Treasury products | About $14.5 billion across 117 products | rwa.xyz |
| Value locked in DeFi protocols | About $90 billion | DefiLlama |
| ETH staked | About 44 million ETH (roughly 35% of supply) | ethereum.org |

## How is regulation changing the crypto market?

Crypto is moving from regulation by enforcement to written rules. In the US, the GENIUS Act created a federal regime for payment stablecoins in July 2025, the SEC approved generic listing standards for crypto exchange-traded products in September 2025, and an SEC interpretation effective in March 2026 said many crypto assets are not themselves securities. The EU's MiCA has applied in full since 30 December 2024, and the UK's full regime is expected from 25 October 2027. Not everything has passed: the US CLARITY Act on market structure stalled in the Senate in September 2026. Our guide to [crypto regulation in the US, UK and EU](https://wealtii.com/learn/crypto-regulations-explained) covers the details.

Clearer rules make it easier for banks, asset managers and payment firms to take part, but they also bring compliance costs, licensing limits and delistings. Rules can also change again, so regulation is not a one-way bet.

## Why do spot crypto ETFs matter?

Spot exchange-traded funds let investors buy crypto exposure through an ordinary brokerage account. The SEC approved spot bitcoin funds in January 2024 and spot ether funds in 2024. Its approval of generic listing standards on 17 September 2025 removed the need for a separate rule change for each new product, and spot funds for assets such as solana and XRP followed in late 2025. ETFs are regulated securities with familiar investor protections, which is a real difference from on-chain products. Our comparison of a [digital asset index fund vs an ETF](https://wealtii.com/learn/digital-asset-index-fund-vs-etf) sets out the trade-offs.

## Why are stablecoins growing?

Stablecoins are tokens designed to hold a steady value, usually one US dollar. They serve as the main trading currency on crypto platforms, a way to move dollars across borders at any hour and a dollar savings tool in countries with weak currencies. DefiLlama tracked about $304 billion of dollar-pegged stablecoins on 21 October 2026, led by Tether (USDT) at about $183 billion and USD Coin (USDC) at about $72 billion. New laws, including the GENIUS Act, MiCA's e-money token rules and Hong Kong's Stablecoins Ordinance, set reserve and redemption standards. The risks remain: a stablecoin can lose its peg if reserves are doubted, and supply is concentrated in a few issuers.

## What is driving real-world asset tokenization?

Tokenization puts traditional assets on a blockchain so they can settle around the clock and be held in small amounts. Tokenized US Treasury products are the largest category: rwa.xyz tracked about $14.5 billion across 117 products on 21 October 2026, with Circle's USYC, Ondo's USDY and BlackRock's BUIDL fund each above $2 billion. Tokenized gold and tokenized stocks are growing too. The key questions are always who holds the underlying asset, how you can redeem, and what legal rights the token carries. Our explainer on [real-world asset tokenization](https://wealtii.com/learn/real-world-asset-tokenization) covers these risks, and our guide to [how tokenized gold works](https://wealtii.com/learn/what-is-tokenized-gold) looks at XAUT and similar tokens.

## How is blockchain infrastructure scaling?

Ethereum's Dencun upgrade (March 2024) gave layer 2 rollups a cheaper way to post data, and the Fusaka upgrade (December 2025) increased how much rollup data the network can carry. Many Ethereum applications now run on layer 2 networks to keep fees low, while still settling on Ethereum. Our guide to [layer 2 solutions](https://wealtii.com/learn/layer-2-solutions-explained) explains how rollups work.

## What could slow these trends?

- **Policy reversals or delays**, such as stalled market-structure legislation.
- **A major stablecoin or issuer failure**, which could trigger stricter rules.
- **Large hacks** of bridges, exchanges or DeFi protocols.
- **Weak legal rights** for tokenized assets if an issuer fails.
- **Market downturns**: trends describe adoption, not prices, and crypto prices can fall sharply even while usage grows.

## How do Wealtii's funds relate to these trends?

Wealtii's Growth and Balanced funds hold tokenized stocks and ETFs (Ondo Global Markets tokens), tokenized gold (XAUT) and a tokenized silver ETF alongside crypto, while the Core fund holds only crypto. Tokenized stocks give economic exposure without shareholder voting rights, and funds that hold them may not be available in all jurisdictions, including the US. ## Frequently Asked Questions

### What are the biggest crypto trends in 2026?

The main trends are clearer regulation (the US GENIUS Act, the EU’s MiCA and a UK regime due in October 2027), spot crypto ETFs beyond bitcoin and ether, the growth of stablecoins to about $304 billion in circulation, and the tokenization of assets such as Treasury bills, stocks and gold.

### Are there spot crypto ETFs beyond Bitcoin and Ethereum?

Yes. After the SEC approved generic listing standards for commodity-based trust shares on 17 September 2025, US exchanges began listing spot funds for other crypto assets, including solana and XRP products that launched in late 2025. Bitcoin and ether spot funds were approved in 2024.

### How big is the stablecoin market?

DefiLlama tracked about $304 billion of US dollar-pegged stablecoins in circulation on 21 October 2026. Tether (USDT) was the largest at about $183 billion, followed by USD Coin (USDC) at about $72 billion. Supply changes daily.

### What is real-world asset (RWA) tokenization?

RWA tokenization means issuing blockchain tokens that represent a traditional asset, such as a Treasury bill fund, a share, an ETF or a bar of gold. The token can be transferred on-chain at any hour, but its value depends on the issuer actually holding the asset and on the legal rights the token gives you.
