# Best Crypto News and Research Sources (and How to Verify Them)

By [Zayd Ahmed](https://wealtii.com/editorial-policy#zayd-ahmed), Founder & CEO, Wealtii · Published 12 February 2026 · Last reviewed 21 October 2026

The most reliable **crypto news and information sources** are primary ones: regulator announcements, court and company filings, project documentation and code, and on-chain data you can check in a block explorer. Specialist crypto news outlets add speed and context, but verify any market-moving claim against the original source before you act on it.

## Which crypto information sources are most reliable?

Rank sources by how close they are to the original fact. The closer a source is to the event, the less room there is for error, spin or a hidden incentive.

| Source type | Examples | Best used for | Watch out for |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Regulators and courts | SEC, CFTC, FCA, ESMA press releases; court filings | Approvals, enforcement actions, rule changes | Dense legal language; read the summary and the order |
| Projects and issuers | Official blogs, documentation, GitHub repositories, reserve reports | Upgrades, token supply, incidents | Self-interest; check claims on-chain where possible |
| On-chain data | mempool.space, Etherscan, BscScan, Dune, DefiLlama, Coin Metrics | Transfers, balances, supply, fees | Address labels are estimates |
| Specialist crypto media | CoinDesk, The Block, Decrypt, Cointelegraph, Bitcoin Magazine | Fast coverage and industry context | Variable quality by author; ownership and sponsorship ties |
| General financial press | Reuters, Bloomberg, Financial Times, AP | Independent verification of big stories | Slower; less technical depth |
| Social media | X, Reddit, Telegram, YouTube | Early alerts and community mood | Rumours, paid promotion, impersonation |

For any outlet, check who owns it, whether it discloses sponsored content and staff holdings, and whether it publishes corrections. A good outlet links to the primary document it is reporting on.

## How do you verify a crypto news story before acting?

1. **Find the original.** Locate the regulator release, filing, blog post or transaction the story is based on.
2. **Check the domain and account.** Fake sites and lookalike handles are common; our guide to [recognising crypto phishing](https://wealtii.com/learn/recognizing-phishing-attacks) shows how they work.
3. **Look for independent confirmation** from at least two outlets that do not simply quote each other.
4. **Check the date.** Old stories are often recirculated as new.
5. **Ask who benefits.** If the source holds the token or is paid to promote it, discount the claim.
6. **Wait.** If a story is true, it will still be true in an hour. Early reports are the most likely to be wrong.

## Can fake news move crypto prices?

Yes, and even an official account is not proof. On 9 January 2024, attackers took control of the US Securities and Exchange Commission's X account and posted a false announcement that the SEC had approved spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds. According to the US Department of Justice, the price of Bitcoin rose by more than $1,000 after the post and fell by more than $2,000 once the SEC regained control and disavowed it. The real approval came the next day, 10 January 2024, and was published on the SEC's own website.

The lesson: a post on social media, even from a verified account, should be checked against the organisation's website before you trade on it.

## How do you use on-chain data as a news source?

Blockchains are public ledgers, so some claims can be checked directly instead of trusted. You can confirm that a transaction happened, see how many tokens sit at an address, track large transfers to exchanges, or check a project's token supply. mempool.space and Etherscan are free explorers for Bitcoin and Ethereum, BscScan covers BNB Smart Chain, and dashboards such as Dune and DefiLlama aggregate activity across protocols. Our guide to [key crypto market indicators](https://wealtii.com/learn/key-crypto-market-indicators) explains which on-chain metrics are worth following.

On-chain data has limits. Labels that say an address belongs to an exchange or a well-known holder are estimates by analytics firms, and one entity can control thousands of addresses. Exchange trading volume is reported off-chain and can be inflated: a study by Cong, Li, Tang and Yang estimated that wash trading averaged over 70% of reported volume on the unregulated exchanges it examined.

Public addresses also let you check custody claims. Wealtii's fund assets are held in a Gnosis Safe multi-signature vault on BNB Smart Chain whose address is published, so anyone can view its holdings on BscScan. ## Which sources should you treat with caution?

### Anonymous Telegram and Discord "alpha" groups

These are common venues for pump-and-dump schemes, where organisers buy first and then urge members to buy so they can sell into the rise. See our catalogue of [common crypto scams](https://wealtii.com/learn/common-crypto-scams).

### Paid promoters and influencers

Many promotions are paid and not clearly disclosed. Our guide to [crypto social sentiment and influencers](https://wealtii.com/learn/crypto-community-and-social-sentiment) covers enforcement cases and how to spot them.

### Price-prediction articles

Headlines forecasting a specific price by a specific date are usually written for clicks. They rarely state their method or track record.

### Unverified firms

If a platform or adviser contacts you, check it with your regulator first. In the UK, the FCA's ScamSmart service lets you check a firm and its Warning List of unauthorised firms.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What are the best sources for crypto news?

Start with primary sources: regulator and court announcements, company filings, official project documentation and code, and on-chain data from block explorers. Use established crypto outlets such as CoinDesk, The Block and Decrypt, and general financial newswires, for speed and context, and treat social media as a lead to check rather than a source.

### How can I tell if crypto news is fake?

Find the original document or announcement behind the story, check that it sits on an official domain, look for confirmation from two independent outlets, and check the timestamp. Remember that official accounts can be hacked, as the SEC's own X account was in January 2024, so a single post is never enough.

### Is on-chain data reliable?

On-chain records of transfers and balances are public and hard to alter, which makes them a strong check on claims. The interpretation is less certain: labels saying which exchange or person owns an address are estimates, one entity can control many addresses, and exchange trading volume reported off-chain can be inflated by wash trading.

### How does news affect crypto prices?

Prices often move within minutes of major news, such as regulatory decisions, exchange failures or large hacks, and expected events are often priced in before they happen. False news can move prices too: a fake approval post on the hacked SEC account sent Bitcoin up more than $1,000 before it fell back.
