# What Is a Crypto Wallet? How Crypto Wallets Work

A **crypto wallet** is software or a device that stores the private keys controlling your cryptocurrency and uses them to sign transactions. The coins themselves stay on the blockchain; the wallet proves you may move them. Wallets are either self-custody, where you hold the keys, or custodial, where an exchange or other provider holds them for you.

## How does a crypto wallet work?

A wallet manages three things. The US SEC's investor bulletin on custody uses a helpful analogy: the public key is like your wallet's email address, and the private key is like its password, except that it can never be changed or reset.

- **Private key:** a randomly generated secret number. On Ethereum it is written as 64 hexadecimal characters. Anyone who has it can move the funds.
- **Public key and address:** derived mathematically from the private key. An Ethereum address, for example, is the last 20 bytes of a hash of the public key, shown as 0x followed by 40 characters. You share the address to receive funds.
- **Signing:** when you send crypto, the wallet builds the transaction, estimates the network fee and signs it with the private key. Nodes verify the signature against your address without ever seeing the key.
- **Reading the blockchain:** most wallets do not run a full copy of the blockchain. They query nodes operated by the wallet provider or a third party to display balances and broadcast transactions, which is why a wallet can show your funds on any device once you restore its keys.

Most modern wallets generate all their keys from one seed phrase of 12 to 24 words, so that phrase is the master backup. Our guide to [private keys and seed phrases](https://wealtii.com/learn/private-keys-and-seed-phrases) explains how one phrase produces every key.

## What is the difference between custodial and non-custodial wallets?

The most important question about any wallet is who holds the keys. That decides who can lose, freeze or recover your crypto.

| Question | Non-custodial (self-custody) | Custodial |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Who holds the private keys | You | The provider (an exchange, broker or custodian) |
| If you forget your password | Restore from your seed phrase; nobody else can help | The provider can usually reset access after identity checks |
| If the provider fails or is hacked | Not affected, because there is no provider | You may lose access, as Mt. Gox (2014) and FTX (2022) customers did |
| Can someone freeze your funds? | Not the wallet maker, though token issuers can freeze some tokens | Yes, the provider can restrict or freeze accounts |
| Examples | MetaMask, Trust Wallet, Ledger, Trezor | An exchange account, a crypto broker, a fund platform |

## What types of crypto wallets are there?

Wallets also differ in form. Hardware wallets keep keys on a dedicated offline device; software wallets run as mobile apps, desktop programs or browser extensions; exchange accounts are custodial wallets; and smart-contract wallets, such as multi-signature Safe accounts, require several approvals to move funds. See [types of crypto wallets compared](https://wealtii.com/learn/types-of-crypto-wallets) for the full breakdown, and [hot vs cold wallets](https://wealtii.com/learn/hot-wallet-vs-cold-wallet) for the security trade-off between online and offline storage.

## What can and can't a crypto wallet do?

- **It can** hold keys for many addresses and networks, show balances read from the blockchain, sign transfers, and connect to decentralized apps.
- **It can't** reverse a confirmed payment, recover a lost seed phrase, or stop you approving a malicious contract. It also only works with the networks it supports: a Bitcoin-only wallet cannot receive ETH, and tokens sent on an unsupported network may be lost.

## How do you choose a crypto wallet?

1. **Which assets and networks?** Check that the wallet supports every coin and network you plan to use, such as Bitcoin, Ethereum or BNB Smart Chain.
2. **How much, and how often?** Larger, rarely moved balances justify a hardware wallet; small, active balances suit a software wallet.
3. **Can you manage backups?** If writing down and protecting a seed phrase worries you, a reputable custodial service may suit you better.
4. **Is the wallet reputable?** Prefer widely used, regularly updated wallets, ideally with open-source code, downloaded only from the official site or app store.

Our [wallet buyer's guide](https://wealtii.com/learn/how-to-choose-a-crypto-wallet) walks through these choices, and the guide on [how to set up a crypto wallet](https://wealtii.com/learn/how-to-set-up-a-crypto-wallet) covers installation and first use.

**Do you need a wallet to use Wealtii?** Not to invest. Wealtii is custodial: fund assets are held 1:1 in a Gnosis Safe vault on BNB Smart Chain that needs all three of its three signatures to move funds, so you never manage keys for them. You do need a wallet or exchange account that supports USDT on BNB Smart Chain (BEP-20) to deposit USDT yourself or to withdraw, because withdrawals are sent as USDT to an external BEP-20 address. Wealtii is not regulated; see [Transparency](https://wealtii.com/transparency) for the public vault address.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Does a crypto wallet store my cryptocurrency?

No. Your cryptocurrency is recorded on the blockchain. A wallet stores the private keys that prove ownership and authorise transfers, which is why a lost wallet can be restored on a new device from its seed phrase.

### Is a crypto wallet free?

Most software wallets are free to download, while hardware wallets cost money to buy. Either way, you pay network fees whenever you send crypto, and some wallets add their own charge for in-app swaps or card purchases.

### Can I have more than one crypto wallet?

Yes, and many people do: a hardware wallet for savings and a software wallet holding a small balance for everyday use. A single seed phrase can also generate many addresses across several networks.

### What happens if my wallet app is deleted or my phone is lost?

If you have the seed phrase, you can restore the wallet, with all its addresses and balances, in the same or a compatible app on a new device. Without the seed phrase, nobody can recover a self-custody wallet for you.
