# Fundamental vs Technical Analysis in Crypto: Which to Use?

**Fundamental analysis** asks whether a crypto asset is worth owning by studying its use, supply, network activity and governance. **Technical analysis** asks when to buy or sell by studying price and volume patterns. Long-term investors lean on fundamentals, short-term traders on technicals, and the evidence for technical trading rules is mixed.

## What is the difference between fundamental and technical analysis?

| Feature | Fundamental analysis | Technical analysis |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Main question | Is this asset worth owning? | Is now a good time to act? |
| Data used | Usage, supply schedule, fees, developer activity, governance, documents | Price, volume, order flow |
| Typical horizon | Months to years | Hours to weeks |
| Common tools | Whitepapers, block explorers, on-chain dashboards, token unlock schedules | Candlesticks, support and resistance, moving averages, RSI, MACD |
| Main weakness | Most tokens have no cash flows, so "fair value" is hard to pin down | Patterns can fail suddenly and results are prone to hindsight bias |

## How do you do fundamental analysis on a crypto asset?

Work through the same questions for every asset and write the answers down, so you can compare projects consistently.

### 1. What problem does it solve, and is it used?

State the use case in one sentence, then look for evidence of real use: transactions, active addresses, fees paid by users and, for DeFi protocols, the value deposited. Fees paid are harder to fake than address counts, because creating many addresses is cheap.

### 2. How does the supply work?

Check the maximum supply, issuance rate, how much is held by insiders and when locked tokens unlock. Large unlocks can add selling pressure. Our guide to [tokenomics and supply and demand](https://wealtii.com/learn/tokenomics-supply-and-demand) explains circulating versus fully diluted supply, and [market cap vs token price](https://wealtii.com/learn/market-cap-vs-token-price) shows why a project's total value matters more than the price per coin.

### 3. Who controls it?

Identify the team, the foundation, the largest holders and who can change the code or freeze funds. Anonymous teams and admin keys that can upgrade contracts at will add risk.

### 4. Read the primary documents

Read the whitepaper, documentation and code repository rather than summaries. The original Bitcoin whitepaper is nine pages long and still readable. Check whether the code has had independent security reviews and how past incidents were handled.

### 5. Look for red flags

Promised fixed returns, pressure to buy quickly and unverifiable partnerships are warning signs. See our [crypto scam red-flag checklist](https://wealtii.com/learn/crypto-scams-and-red-flags).

## How do you do technical analysis?

Technical analysts start with the trend on a higher timeframe, mark support and resistance zones, check whether volume confirms price moves, and add a small number of indicators such as the 200-day moving average or RSI. The mechanics are covered step by step in [how to read crypto charts](https://wealtii.com/learn/reading-cryptocurrency-charts). Many investors also follow broader signals, such as funding rates or exchange flows, listed in our guide to [key crypto market indicators](https://wealtii.com/learn/key-crypto-market-indicators).

## Does technical analysis work in crypto?

The academic record is mixed. Park and Irwin's 2007 review in the Journal of Economic Surveys examined 95 modern studies: 56 found positive results for technical trading strategies, 20 negative and 19 mixed. The authors cautioned that most studies suffered from testing problems, including data snooping, choosing rules after seeing the data, and difficulty estimating risk and transaction costs. The consistent profits they did find were mainly in data up to the early 1990s.

Crypto adds its own complications. A peer-reviewed study of 29 centralised exchanges by Cong, Li, Tang and Yang estimated that wash trading averaged over 70% of reported volume on the unregulated exchanges it examined, which distorts the volume signals that technical analysis relies on. Sudden news can also override any chart: Lennart Ante's 2023 study of 47 crypto-related Twitter events involving Elon Musk found significant abnormal returns and trading volume afterwards. On average the effect was significant only for Dogecoin, but individual tweets moved Bitcoin up by 16.9% or down by almost 11.8%.

## Can you combine fundamental and technical analysis?

Yes, as long as each does the job it is suited to. A practical split:

- **Fundamentals decide what you own** and how much, based on conviction and risk.
- **Technical context shapes how you execute**: for example, spreading purchases over time after a near-vertical rally rather than buying all at once.
- **Rules decide when you rebalance**, so neither method tempts you into constant trading.

The biggest risk with both methods is overconfidence. A strong fundamental story does not stop an asset falling 80% in a bear market, and a clean chart pattern can fail on a single headline.

If you prefer not to analyse individual assets, a fund is one option. Wealtii's funds use fixed target allocations set by Wealtii's allocation methodology with position caps, rather than weights based on each asset's market capitalisation. ## Frequently Asked Questions

### What is fundamental analysis in crypto?

Fundamental analysis estimates whether a crypto asset is worth owning by studying what it is used for, how its supply works, how much the network is actually used, who controls it and how it is governed. It answers the question of what to own and is mainly used by investors with a horizon of a year or more.

### What is technical analysis in crypto?

Technical analysis studies past price and volume to judge trend, momentum and likely turning points, using tools such as support and resistance, moving averages, RSI and MACD. It answers the question of when to act and is mainly used by traders with horizons from hours to weeks.

### Which is better for crypto, fundamental or technical analysis?

They answer different questions. Long-term investors benefit most from fundamentals, because they decide whether an asset deserves a place in a portfolio at all. Technical tools can help with execution and risk control, but the academic evidence that trading rules beat the market after costs is mixed.

### Does technical analysis actually work?

Sometimes, and less reliably than its fans suggest. A review by Park and Irwin of 95 modern studies found 56 positive, 20 negative and 19 mixed results, but warned that most suffered from problems such as data snooping, choosing rules after the fact and underestimating risk and trading costs.
