# Real-World Asset (RWA) Tokenization Explained (2026)

By [Zayd Ahmed](https://wealtii.com/editorial-policy#zayd-ahmed), Founder & CEO, Wealtii · Published 1 August 2026 · Last reviewed 21 October 2026

**Real-world asset (RWA) tokenization** is the process of representing an off-chain asset, such as gold, a share, a bond or a fund unit, as a token on a blockchain. The token's value rests on a legal claim against an issuer or custodian holding the real asset, so a token is only as sound as that structure.

## What counts as a real-world asset in crypto?

In crypto, a real-world asset is anything whose value comes from outside the blockchain. The main categories being tokenized today are:

- **Commodities:** mainly gold, through tokens such as Tether Gold and PAX Gold. Our guide to [how tokenized gold works](https://wealtii.com/learn/what-is-tokenized-gold) covers them in detail.
- **Stocks and ETFs:** tokens that track listed companies or funds, explained in [tokenized stocks explained](https://wealtii.com/learn/tokenized-stocks-explained).
- **Government debt and money market funds:** tokenized Treasury-bill funds used by institutions to hold dollar yield on-chain.
- **Private credit, real estate and collectibles:** smaller, less liquid markets where tokenization is mostly used to split ownership.

## How does RWA tokenization work?

1. **Hold the asset:** an issuer, fund or special-purpose vehicle buys the asset and places it with a custodian, such as a bank, broker-dealer or bullion vault.
2. **Define the rights:** legal documents say what a token holder owns: the asset itself, a share in a fund, or a contractual right to its price performance.
3. **Issue the tokens:** smart contracts mint tokens and often enforce transfer rules, for example allowing transfers only to verified wallets.
4. **Report and redeem:** the issuer publishes reserve or holdings reports and lets eligible holders swap tokens back for the asset or cash.

The Bank for International Settlements argues that tokenisation "integrates messaging, reconciliation and settlement into a single seamless operation", which is why banks and asset managers are interested. The efficiency only holds if the off-chain legal claim is enforceable.

## What is the difference between custodial and synthetic tokens?

In a January 2026 staff statement, three SEC divisions set out a useful taxonomy. Securities can be tokenized by their issuer, or by an unaffiliated third party. Third-party tokens come in two forms:

- **Custodial tokenized securities** represent a holding of the underlying security, which a custodian keeps on the holder's behalf.
- **Synthetic tokenized securities** are the third party's own instrument, such as a structured note or a security-based swap, that tracks the underlying security. According to the staff, such instruments typically carry no voting, information or other rights from the original issuer, and holders face risks of the third party, including its bankruptcy.

The staff statement treats a tokenized security as a security that happens to be represented by a crypto asset, so federal securities laws continue to apply to it. Before buying any RWA token, find out which type it is and who you would have a claim against.

## What are real examples of tokenized real-world assets?

| Token | What it represents | Who can buy it |
| --- | --- | --- |
| BlackRock USD Institutional Digital Liquidity Fund (BUIDL) | Fund shares recorded as tokens; invests in cash, US Treasury bills and repos | Qualified investors via Securitize Markets; $5 million initial minimum; transfers only to pre-approved investors |
| Tether Gold (XAUT) | Interest in one fine troy ounce of vaulted gold per token | Verified customers buy and redeem with the issuer; tokens also trade on exchanges |
| Ondo Global Markets tokens (for example AAPLon) | Economic exposure to a US stock or ETF; dividends reinvested; no shareholder voting rights | Generally non-US investors, subject to jurisdictional restrictions |

BUIDL launched on Ethereum in March 2024, aims for a stable $1 value per token, and uses BNY Mellon as custodian and Securitize as transfer agent. Ondo Global Markets tokens are issued by Ondo Global Markets (BVI) Limited, are available on Ethereum, BNB Chain and Solana, and are explored further in our [guide to Ondo tokenized stocks](https://wealtii.com/learn/ondo-tokenized-stocks-explained).

## What are the benefits of tokenizing real-world assets?

- **Faster settlement:** transfers settle on-chain in minutes instead of days.
- **Smaller sizes:** a token can represent a fraction of an ounce or a share, lowering the cost of entry.
- **Round-the-clock transfers:** tokens move at any hour, even when the home market of the asset is closed.
- **Visible supply:** anyone can check how many tokens exist on-chain and compare that with the issuer's reserve reports.

These benefits have limits. A stock token that trades on Sunday has no live stock-exchange price behind it, so its price can drift; and redemption usually stays restricted to verified customers.

## What are the risks of tokenized real-world assets?

- **Legal rights:** a synthetic token may give you price exposure without any claim on the asset.
- **Issuer and custodian failure:** if either fails, recovery depends on the legal structure and may be slow.
- **Freezes and eligibility:** issuers can freeze tokens, and many products are closed to US persons or limited to professional investors.
- **Technology:** smart-contract bugs, bridges between chains and lost keys can all cause permanent loss.

**How Wealtii funds use tokenized RWAs:** the [Wealtii Tech & Digital Asset Growth Fund](https://wealtii.com/funds/wealtii-tech-digital-asset-growth-fund) holds Ondo Global Markets tokens for NVIDIA (17.6%), Alphabet (16.3%), Invesco QQQ (15.4%) and Apple (15.3%), plus Tether Gold (11.8%). The [Wealtii Multi-Asset Balanced Allocation Fund](https://wealtii.com/funds/wealtii-multi-asset-balanced-allocation-fund) holds tokenized SPDR S&P 500 ETF (19.8%), tokenized iShares Silver Trust (19.6%) and Tether Gold (19.1%). The rest of each fund is crypto; figures are target allocations as of 21 Oct 2026. The stock tokens give economic exposure without shareholder voting rights, and funds holding them may not be available in all jurisdictions, including the United States. ## Frequently Asked Questions

### What is real-world asset (RWA) tokenization?

RWA tokenization is the process of representing an off-chain asset, such as gold, a share, a bond or a fund unit, as a token on a blockchain. The token records who holds the claim, while an issuer or custodian holds the underlying asset and the legal documents define what the token holder is entitled to.

### Does owning a tokenized asset mean I own the underlying asset?

Not always. SEC staff distinguish custodial tokens, which represent a holding of the underlying security, from synthetic tokens that only track its price. Synthetic tokens typically give no voting or information rights, and the holder is exposed to the token issuer, including its possible bankruptcy.

### What are real examples of tokenized real-world assets?

Examples include BlackRock's BUIDL fund, launched on Ethereum in March 2024 and invested in cash, US Treasury bills and repurchase agreements; Tether Gold (XAUT), backed by gold vaulted in Switzerland; and Ondo Global Markets tokens, which give economic exposure to US stocks and ETFs for eligible non-US investors.

### What are the main risks of tokenized real-world assets?

The main risks are unclear legal rights, failure of the issuer or custodian, token freezes, eligibility restrictions, prices that drift from the underlying asset when its home market is closed, thin trading, and smart-contract or bridge bugs. Read the issuer's terms before buying.
