# Tokenized Gold vs Physical Gold: Costs, Risks & Redemption

By [Zayd Ahmed](https://wealtii.com/editorial-policy#zayd-ahmed), Founder & CEO, Wealtii · Published 1 August 2026 · Last reviewed 21 October 2026

**Tokenized gold vs physical gold** comes down to who holds the metal. With physical gold you own coins or bars and handle storage yourself. With tokenized gold such as XAUT or PAXG you hold a blockchain token backed by vaulted bars, gaining 24/7 trading and small sizes but taking on issuer and technology risk.

## What is the core difference between tokenized and physical gold?

Physical gold is a direct holding: a coin or bar you, or a storage company you hire, keeps. Nobody else has to perform for you to keep your gold. Tokenized gold is a claim recorded on a blockchain. Tether Gold's terms describe each XAUT as an undivided interest in one fine troy ounce held by its custodian in Switzerland, and Paxos says each PAXG represents one ounce of London Good Delivery gold held by Paxos Trust Company in London vaults. If you are new to the token side, start with our explainer on [what tokenized gold is and how it works](https://wealtii.com/learn/what-is-tokenized-gold).

Both track the same metal price, so the choice is about cost, convenience and which risks you prefer to carry.

## How do the costs of tokenized and physical gold compare?

Costs appear at different stages. Physical gold is expensive to buy in small sizes and to store; tokenized gold is cheap to hold but can be expensive to turn back into metal.

| Stage | Tokenized gold | Physical gold |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Buying | Exchange spread and trading fee, or issuer fees and minimums when buying direct | Dealer premium over the spot price, usually higher on small coins |
| Holding | Usually no direct storage fee; network fees each time you move tokens | Home safe, bank box or vault fees, plus insurance |
| Selling | Sell on an exchange at any hour, at the quoted bid | Dealer buy-back price during opening hours; bars may need re-assaying |
| Getting metal | Redemption minimums (about one bar for XAUT) plus delivery fees | Already in your hands |

Issuer fees differ: Paxos states that PAXG carries zero storage fees and zero on-chain transfer fees, while Tether Gold applies a fee schedule to purchases and redemptions and asks new direct customers for a non-refundable 150 USDT verification deposit. Our [XAUT vs PAXG fee and custody comparison](https://wealtii.com/learn/xaut-vs-paxg) sets the two side by side.

## Which is easier to sell or move?

Tokenized gold wins on liquidity and portability. Tokens trade around the clock on exchanges and can be sent to another wallet in minutes, which makes it practical to rebalance between gold and crypto, as described in our guide to [holding Bitcoin and gold in one portfolio](https://wealtii.com/learn/invest-in-bitcoin-and-gold-together). Physical gold has to be shown to a dealer, often in person and during business hours, and moving it across borders raises transport, insurance and customs questions.

Tokens can also become hard to sell. Tether Gold's terms note that thin markets can be more volatile, that exchanges can delist tokens, and that tokens on one blockchain may not be readily exchangeable for tokens on another.

## What can go wrong with each?

| Risk | Tokenized gold | Physical gold |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Theft or loss | Lost private keys or a hacked wallet | Burglary, loss, or a failed storage provider |
| Counterparty | Issuer and vault custodian must keep the gold and honour redemptions | None once the metal is in your possession |
| Freezes | Issuer can freeze tokens under its terms | Not applicable |
| Authenticity | Depends on reserve reports and bar lists | Counterfeits exist; buy bars from accredited refiners |
| Technology | Smart-contract, bridge and network risk | Not applicable |

Two details from Tether Gold's terms are worth knowing: the custodian's insurance is not expected to cover the full gold reserves, and redemptions can take several business days or be delayed if reserves become unavailable. If you self-custody tokens, the biggest practical risk is usually your own key management; see [how private keys and seed phrases work](https://wealtii.com/learn/private-keys-and-seed-phrases).

## Can you convert tokenized gold into physical gold?

You can, but not in small amounts. Tether Gold lets verified customers redeem XAUT for a London Good Delivery bar; it may ask for 430 tokens and returns or requests the difference once the actual bar weight is known. The holder can take delivery at a location in Switzerland, paying delivery fees, or ask Tether Gold to arrange a sale through a licensed gold broker. Paxos offers redemption of PAXG for Good Delivery bars or for US dollars at market prices. Good Delivery gold bars weigh approximately 400 troy ounces, according to the LBMA, so physical redemption is realistic only for large holders.

## How are tokenized and physical gold taxed?

Tax depends on where you live. In the United States, the IRS taxes net capital gains on collectibles such as coins at a maximum 28% rate, above the 20% maximum that applies to most long-term gains. The IRS topic page does not address gold-backed tokens specifically, so confirm the treatment of XAUT or PAXG with a tax adviser. Keep records of every purchase, sale and transfer of either form.

## Which should you choose?

- **Physical gold** suits long-term holders who want no reliance on an issuer or the internet, and who can store it securely.
- **Tokenized gold** suits investors who want small position sizes, round-the-clock trading and easy rebalancing against crypto, and who accept issuer and technology risk.
- **A mix** is common: a core of coins or bars for resilience, plus a smaller tokenized position for flexibility.

**How Wealtii uses tokenized gold:** Wealtii funds hold Tether Gold (XAUT) tokens, not physical bars, and only as part of multi-asset funds: 19.1% of the [Wealtii Multi-Asset Balanced Allocation Fund](https://wealtii.com/funds/wealtii-multi-asset-balanced-allocation-fund) and 11.8% of the Wealtii Tech & Digital Asset Growth Fund (target allocations, 21 Oct 2026). Investors hold fund units, cannot redeem them for gold, and withdraw in USDT. Wealtii is not regulated.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Is tokenized gold better than physical gold?

Neither is better for everyone. Tokenized gold is easier to buy in small amounts, hold and trade 24/7, but you depend on an issuer, a vault custodian and a blockchain. Physical gold removes those dependencies but brings storage, insurance and resale costs, and selling it takes longer.

### Can I exchange tokenized gold for physical gold?

Yes, under the issuer's terms and usually only in large amounts. Tether Gold redeems XAUT for a London Good Delivery bar, which typically means around 430 tokens, delivered within Switzerland after account verification, and fees apply. Paxos offers PAXG redemption for gold bars or US dollars.

### Do I pay storage fees on tokenized gold?

Usually not directly. Paxos states that PAXG has zero storage fees, and Tether Gold charges fees under its fee schedule mainly when you buy from or redeem with the issuer. You still pay network fees to move tokens and spreads when you trade on an exchange.

### What happens to tokenized gold if the issuer fails?

You would rely on the legal structure behind the token. Tether Gold's terms say the custodian holds the gold on behalf of token holders, but holders would have to pursue claims with their own resources, and if the bar-allocation software failed a holder could become an unsecured creditor of the custodian.
