# Two-Factor Authentication for Crypto: 2FA Methods Ranked

By [Zayd Ahmed](https://wealtii.com/editorial-policy#zayd-ahmed), Founder & CEO, Wealtii · Published 12 February 2026 · Last reviewed 21 October 2026

**Two-factor authentication (2FA)** for crypto adds a second proof of identity, beyond your password, before anyone can log in or withdraw. The strongest option is a FIDO2 security key or passkey, which resists phishing; an authenticator app is a good default; SMS codes are the weakest because SIM swaps and phishing can intercept them.

## How does two-factor authentication protect a crypto account?

2FA combines two different kinds of evidence: something you know (a password) and something you have (a phone app, a security key) or something you are (a fingerprint that unlocks a key). A stolen password alone is then not enough to sign in, change settings or withdraw. 2FA protects accounts: crypto exchanges, custodial investment platforms and, just as important, the email address that can reset all of them. It does not protect a self-custody wallet, where the recovery phrase is the only key; for that, see our [wallet security best practices](https://wealtii.com/learn/wallet-security-best-practices) and our guide to [backing up a recovery phrase offline](https://wealtii.com/learn/safe-storage-of-recovery-phrases).

## Which 2FA methods are strongest?

US government guidance ranks the options clearly. CISA's fact sheet on phishing-resistant MFA (October 2022) says "the only widely available phishing-resistant authentication is FIDO/WebAuthn" and that SMS or voice codes should be a last resort. NIST's SP 800-63B-4 (August 2025) classes authentication over the phone network as "restricted" and states that one-time-password authentication is not phishing-resistant.

| Method | How it works | Phishing-resistant? | Main weakness |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| **Hardware security key (FIDO2)** | USB or NFC key signs a challenge for the genuine site | Yes | Losing the key without a registered backup key |
| **Passkey (FIDO2)** | Phone or computer signs in after a fingerprint, face or PIN check | Yes | Synced passkeys depend on your cloud account's security |
| **Authenticator app (TOTP)** | App shows a 6-digit code that changes every 30 seconds | No | Codes can be typed into a fake site and relayed in real time |
| **Push approval** | Tap "approve" in an app; number matching adds a check | No | "Push bombing" floods you with prompts until you accept |
| **Email code** | One-time code sent to your inbox | No | Only as strong as your email account |
| **SMS or voice code** | Code sent to your phone number | No | SIM swaps and phone-network interception |

## Why is SMS 2FA risky for crypto accounts?

In a SIM swap, a criminal persuades or bribes a mobile carrier to move your number to a SIM card they control. Every text code then goes to them, and many services also let a phone number reset your password. CISA lists SIM swaps and attacks on the SS7 phone-signalling network as the main ways SMS codes are stolen. The FBI's IC3 logged 971 SIM-swap complaints with $17.4 million in reported losses in 2025 (2025 Internet Crime Report). If a platform only offers SMS, ask your carrier for a port-out PIN or SIM lock and remove your phone number as an account-recovery option wherever possible.

## How do you set up an authenticator app correctly?

1. Install a reputable authenticator app from your phone's official app store.
2. In the crypto platform's security settings, choose authenticator-app 2FA and scan the QR code.
3. Write down or print the backup codes or setup key and store them offline, away from your phone.
4. Enter a code to confirm, then remove SMS as a fallback if the platform allows it.
5. If your app syncs codes to a cloud account, protect that account with its own strong 2FA.
6. Before replacing or wiping your phone, move your codes to the new device first.

## Can 2FA codes be phished?

Yes. CISA's fact sheet describes the standard attack: a fake login page collects your username, password and the 6-digit code from your authenticator app, and the attacker replays them on the real site within seconds. Fake "support agents" also ask for codes directly. A security key or passkey defeats this because it will not sign in to a look-alike domain. Our guide on [how to recognise crypto phishing](https://wealtii.com/learn/recognizing-phishing-attacks) shows the common lures.

## What happens if you lose your 2FA device?

- **Use your backup codes** or a second registered security key to sign in, then set up 2FA again.
- **Without backups,** the platform's recovery process will ask you to prove your identity, and it is deliberately slow to stop attackers using it.
- **Ignore anyone offering to "reset" your 2FA** for a fee; that is a scam. If you think someone already has access, follow our steps for [what to do if your account is hacked](https://wealtii.com/learn/what-to-do-if-hacked).

### 2FA on Wealtii

Wealtii uses one-time codes sent to your email to verify sign-ins, and you can add authenticator-app (TOTP) two-factor authentication to your account. We recommend turning it on and keeping your backup codes offline. The [Wealtii account security page](https://wealtii.com/security) explains what is in place today.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Is an authenticator app better than SMS for crypto accounts?

Yes. Authenticator-app codes are generated on your device, so a SIM swap cannot redirect them, while SMS codes travel over the phone network and can be intercepted. App codes can still be phished if you type them into a fake site, which is why a FIDO2 security key or passkey is stronger still.

### Are passkeys the same as hardware security keys?

Both use the FIDO2/WebAuthn standard and both resist phishing, because they only sign in to the genuine website. A hardware security key keeps its secret on a separate physical device. A passkey is usually stored on your phone or computer and may sync across your devices through a cloud account, which you must then protect well.

### Does 2FA protect my hardware wallet or recovery phrase?

No. Two-factor authentication protects accounts such as exchanges, custodial platforms and email. A self-custody wallet has no login: anyone with your recovery phrase or private key can move the funds on-chain without any second factor, so the phrase needs offline protection of its own.

### What should I do if someone asks for my 2FA code?

Refuse and end the conversation. A 2FA code is only ever typed into the website or app you are signing in to. Genuine support teams do not need it, so anyone asking, by phone, email, chat or social media, is trying to take over your account.
