# What Is a Multi-Sig Wallet? Multi-Signature Crypto Explained

By [Zayd Ahmed](https://wealtii.com/editorial-policy#zayd-ahmed), Founder & CEO, Wealtii · Published 1 August 2026 · Last reviewed 21 October 2026

A **multi-signature (multi-sig) wallet** is a crypto wallet that needs approvals from several separate keys before it can move funds. It is described as m-of-n: n keys exist and any m of them must sign. A 2-of-3 wallet, for example, survives one lost key and stops a thief who steals only one.

## How does a multi-sig wallet work?

An ordinary wallet is controlled by one private key: whoever holds it can sign and send (our explainer on [private keys and seed phrases](https://wealtii.com/learn/private-keys-and-seed-phrases) covers the basics). A multi-sig wallet replaces that single key with a rule. A transaction is proposed, each key holder reviews and signs it, and the blockchain only accepts it once the required number of valid signatures is attached.

- **On Bitcoin,** multi-sig is built into the scripting language: an address can require m of n listed public keys to spend.
- **On Ethereum, BNB Smart Chain and other EVM networks,** multi-sig is a smart contract account (see [how smart contracts work](https://wealtii.com/learn/smart-contracts-explained)). The contract stores a list of owners and a threshold, and it executes a transaction only when enough owners have signed.

Safe's documentation defines the threshold as "the minimum number of owners required to confirm a transaction before it gets executed". It can be set anywhere from one to the total number of owners.

## What do m-of-n setups like 2-of-3 and 3-of-3 mean?

The threshold is a trade-off between protection against theft (more signatures required) and protection against loss (spare keys).

| Setup | Signatures to move funds | One key stolen | One key lost | Typical use |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| **1-of-1** (normal wallet) | 1 | Funds at risk | Funds lost without a backup | Everyday wallets |
| **2-of-2** | 2 | Funds protected | Funds locked without a backup | Two-person approval |
| **2-of-3** | 2 | Funds protected | Still accessible | Individuals and families |
| **3-of-3** | 3 (all) | Funds protected | Funds locked without a backup | Requiring every signer to approve |
| **3-of-5** | 3 | Funds protected (even two stolen) | Still accessible (even two lost) | Organisations and DAO treasuries |

An n-of-n setup such as 3-of-3 gives the strictest approval rule, because every key must sign, so each key needs its own reliable backup.

## What is Safe (formerly Gnosis Safe)?

Safe, originally called Gnosis Safe, is open-source smart account software widely used for multi-signature wallets on Ethereum and other EVM networks, including BNB Smart Chain. Each Safe keeps its owner list and threshold on-chain. Safe also supports **modules**, add-on contracts that can execute transactions without the normal owner signatures, and **guards**, which run extra checks. When you assess a Safe, check which modules are enabled, because a module can bypass the threshold.

## What are the benefits and risks of multi-sig?

- **Benefit, theft resistance:** one stolen key, device or recovery phrase is not enough to move funds.
- **Benefit, loss resistance:** with spare keys (m smaller than n), a lost or destroyed key is recoverable.
- **Benefit, shared control:** treasuries, businesses and families can require several people to approve.
- **Risk, complexity:** more keys and backups to manage means more room for mistakes.
- **Risk, signing what you cannot see:** multi-sig does not stop signers who are tricked into approving a malicious transaction; each signer should check the details on a hardware wallet's own screen.
- **Risk, independence:** the protection depends on how separately the keys are stored and controlled.
- **Risk, smart contracts:** on EVM chains, security also depends on the contract code and any modules enabled.

## Multi-sig vs MPC wallets: what is the difference?

MPC (multi-party computation) wallets also spread control, but differently. An MPC wallet splits one private key into shares held by separate parties or devices, which cooperate to produce a single ordinary signature. On-chain, an MPC wallet looks like a normal one-key wallet, so outsiders cannot see the threshold, and the security depends on the provider's software. A multi-sig wallet's rules sit openly on the blockchain, where anyone can inspect them.

## How do you set up a personal multi-sig wallet?

1. Choose the software: Safe for EVM networks, or a Bitcoin wallet that supports multi-sig.
2. Use separate hardware wallets for each key, ideally from different manufacturers.
3. Store each key's recovery phrase in a different place; see our [advanced wallet security protections](https://wealtii.com/learn/wallet-security-best-practices).
4. For Bitcoin, also back up the wallet configuration (the list of public keys), which you need to rebuild the wallet.
5. Send a small test amount in and out before moving larger sums.

### How Wealtii uses multi-sig

Wealtii holds user fund assets 1:1 in a Gnosis Safe 3-of-3 multi-signature vault on BNB Smart Chain at 0x54dd6ADaCe8BFd8feAA9cdf1Ca8891c74FaB2583. Moving vault funds requires all three signatures, and anyone can check the vault's holdings on BscScan. ## Frequently Asked Questions

### What is a 2-of-3 multi-sig wallet?

A 2-of-3 multi-sig wallet has three keys, and any two of them must sign before funds can move. It keeps working if one key is lost, and a thief who steals one key still cannot move anything. It is the most common setup for individuals who want both theft protection and a spare key.

### Is a multi-sig wallet more secure than a hardware wallet?

They solve different problems and are often used together. A hardware wallet protects one key from malware. A multi-sig wallet spreads control across several keys, often each on its own hardware wallet, so one stolen or lost device is not enough to lose the funds. Multi-sig adds complexity, so it suits larger balances.

### What happens if you lose a key in a multi-sig wallet?

If enough keys remain to meet the threshold, you can still move funds and should replace the lost key. In a 2-of-3 wallet, losing one key is recoverable. In an n-of-n wallet such as 2-of-2 or 3-of-3, every key is required, so losing any one key without a backup locks the funds.

### Can you check a Safe wallet's threshold yourself?

Yes. A Safe smart account stores its owner list and signature threshold in its contract on the blockchain, so anyone can read them on a block explorer or in the Safe app. Owner addresses alone do not show who controls the keys.
