How does a global network of thousands of computers — run by strangers who may be adversarial — agree on a single authoritative ledger without a central authority? The answer is a consensus mechanism. These are the rules that allow decentralised blockchains to function, and understanding them is foundational to evaluating the security and scalability of any blockchain investment.

Proof of Work (PoW)

Used by: Bitcoin, Litecoin

Miners compete to solve a computationally expensive mathematical puzzle. The first to solve it earns the right to add the next block and receives the block reward (newly minted coins + transaction fees). This puzzle requires enormous energy, making it economically irrational to attack the network.

  • Most battle-tested security model (~15 years for Bitcoin)
  • True permissionless participation — anyone with hardware can mine
  • Energy expenditure makes attack costs transparent and enormous
  • Resistant to validator collusion

  • Extremely energy-intensive
  • Tends toward mining pool centralisation
  • Slower transaction finality
  • Expensive hardware required for competitive mining

Proof of Stake (PoS)

Used by: Ethereum, Cardano, Solana

Validators lock up (stake) cryptocurrency as collateral to participate in block validation. Validators are selected to propose and attest to blocks based on their stake size and randomness. Dishonest behaviour results in "slashing" — a portion of their stake is destroyed. No energy-intensive computation is required.

  • ~99.95% more energy-efficient than PoW
  • Enables higher transaction throughput
  • Lower barrier to participation (no specialised hardware)
  • Economic penalties (slashing) discourage bad behaviour

  • Wealthier validators have more influence (stake-weighted)
  • Younger security model — less battle-tested than PoW
  • Risk of stake centralisation

Delegated Proof of Stake (DPoS)

Used by: EOS, TRON

Token holders vote for a small set of "delegates" or "witnesses" who are responsible for producing blocks on their behalf. Highly efficient but significantly more centralised than PoW or PoS.

A cryptographic clock that creates a verifiable record of time between events. Combined with PoS, it allows validators to process transactions in parallel, enabling Solana's theoretical 65,000 TPS throughput.

  • More centralised validator requirements (high-spec hardware)
  • Has experienced notable network outages
  • Less battle-tested than PoW/PoS

The 51% Attack Problem

In any consensus system, if one entity controls more than 51% of the network's validation power (hash rate in PoW, stake in PoS), they can theoretically rewrite recent transaction history or double-spend coins. This is the "51% attack." Bitcoin and Ethereum are considered effectively immune to this — the cost of acquiring 51% of their respective validation resources far exceeds any potential reward. Smaller blockchains have been successfully attacked this way.
