The cryptocurrency industry is infamous for its dense jargon and unique slang. Understanding the terminology is the first step to confidently navigating the space. This section covers essential terms from M to O.

Mainnet

The fully operational, live version of a blockchain network where transactions carry real economic value. Distinct from a "testnet," which is used by developers for testing.

Market Cap (Capitalisation)

The total market value of a cryptocurrency's circulating supply. Calculated as: Current Price x Circulating Supply. The primary metric used to rank the size and stability of cryptocurrencies.

Mempool (Memory Pool)

The "waiting room" of a blockchain network. It is the collection of all unconfirmed transactions waiting to be picked up by a miner or validator and included in the next block.

MetaMask

The most popular software wallet (browser extension and mobile app) used to interact with the Ethereum blockchain and EVM-compatible networks like Arbitrum, Base, and Polygon.

Mining

The process in Proof of Work networks (like Bitcoin) where computers use computational power to solve mathematical puzzles. The winner validates the next block of transactions and receives newly minted coins as a reward.

Multisig (Multi-Signature)

A type of cryptocurrency wallet that requires more than one private key to authorise a transaction (e.g., 2-of-3 signatures). Used heavily by institutions, funds, and DAOs for enhanced security.

NFT (Non-Fungible Token)

A unique digital identifier recorded on a blockchain that represents ownership of a specific asset. Unlike Bitcoin, which is fungible (interchangeable), every NFT is distinct.

Node

Any computer connected to a blockchain network. Full nodes host a complete copy of the blockchain ledger and enforce the network's consensus rules, rejecting invalid transactions.

Non-Custodial

A wallet or service where you hold your own private keys. You have complete control over your funds, but no recourse to recover them if you lose your backup seed phrase.

Off-Chain

Transactions or data processing that occurs outside the main blockchain network to save time and fees, only settling the final state on-chain. Layer 2 networks operate off-chain.

On-Chain

Transactions that are fully recorded, verified, and settled on the main blockchain ledger. They are immutable and publicly visible to anyone.

Oracle

A service that feeds real-world data (like the price of Apple stock, or weather data) into a blockchain so that smart contracts can execute based on real-world events. Chainlink is the most prominent oracle network.

OTC (Over-The-Counter)

The process of trading large amounts of cryptocurrency directly between two parties outside of a public exchange. Used by institutions and "whales" to avoid moving the market price with a massive order.
