The cryptocurrency industry is infamous for its dense jargon and unique slang. Understanding the terminology is the first step to confidently navigating the space. This section covers essential terms from P to R.

Paper Wallet

A physical document that contains copies of the public and private keys (usually as QR codes) that make up a cryptocurrency wallet. A form of deep cold storage.

Peer-to-Peer (P2P)

A decentralised communications model where two parties interact directly with each other without the need for a central intermediary. The fundamental architecture of Bitcoin.

Private Key

A secure, alphanumeric string (similar to a highly complex password) that proves ownership of funds on a given address and allows them to be spent. If you lose it, you lose your funds. If you share it, your funds can be stolen.

Proof of Stake (PoS)

A consensus mechanism where network validators lock up (stake) their own cryptocurrency as collateral for the right to process transactions. Bad behaviour results in their stake being destroyed (slashed). Highly energy-efficient.

Proof of Work (PoW)

The original consensus mechanism used by Bitcoin. "Miners" use specialised hardware to solve complex mathematical puzzles. The first to solve it gets to validate the next block and earns a reward. Highly secure but extremely energy-intensive.

Public Key

A cryptographic code paired with your private key that allows you to receive funds. It is safe to share your public key (or the wallet address derived from it) with others.

Pump and Dump

An illegal market manipulation scheme where a group coordinates to buy a low-liquidity asset to artificially inflate its price (pump), creating hype, before selling their holdings to retail investors at the peak (dump).

Rekt

Crypto slang (derived from "wrecked") referring to an investor who has lost substantial money on a trade, usually due to high leverage liquidation or a sudden market crash.

ROI (Return on Investment)

A standard financial metric used to evaluate the efficiency or profitability of an investment. Calculated by dividing the net profit by the total cost of the investment, expressed as a percentage.

Rug Pull

A malicious scam in the crypto space where developers suddenly abandon a project and run away with investors' funds, usually by draining the liquidity pool on a decentralised exchange.
