Investing in Bitcoin and gold together means holding a high-volatility growth asset alongside a lower-volatility store of value, usually with gold as the larger share. Gold has been far less volatile than Bitcoin, so a mix can soften swings. It does not remove risk: Bitcoin has fallen 70-80% from past peaks.

Why do investors pair Bitcoin with gold?

Bitcoin and gold are both scarce assets that no government can print, but they behave very differently. Bitcoin's issuance is fixed by its software: new coins are created at a decreasing rate until a total of 21 million exists. Its price depends heavily on adoption, and BlackRock notes past sell-offs of 70-80% from peak to bottom. Gold is an established reserve asset with a far longer price history.

The World Gold Council (an industry body for gold producers) found that gold has been much less volatile than Bitcoin over rolling five-year periods, and that during the August 2024 market sell-off Bitcoin tracked risk assets while gold did not. That difference is the case for owning both: gold can cushion part of a Bitcoin drawdown, while a small Bitcoin position adds growth potential.

How much Bitcoin versus gold should you hold?

Professional guidance keeps Bitcoin small within a whole portfolio. BlackRock described a 1-2% Bitcoin allocation as a reasonable range for a multi-asset portfolio, for investors who expect wider adoption and can absorb rapid price falls. The World Gold Council's portfolio tests found that Bitcoin allocations above 2.5% raised volatility and deepened drawdowns. Both organisations have a commercial interest in these markets, so treat their conclusions as informed views, not neutral rules.

Within a gold-and-Bitcoin sleeve, the split decides how much a crash hurts. The table shows two hypothetical one-off moves with gold unchanged.

Hypothetical change in a gold and Bitcoin mix (illustration only, not a forecast)
MixIf Bitcoin falls 75%If Bitcoin doubles
90% gold / 10% Bitcoin-7.5%+10%
75% gold / 25% Bitcoin-18.75%+25%
50% gold / 50% Bitcoin-37.5%+50%

How do you rebalance a Bitcoin and gold mix?

Because Bitcoin moves faster, the mix drifts. Suppose you start with $800 in gold and $200 in Bitcoin (80/20). If Bitcoin doubles and gold is flat, you hold $800 and $400, a 67/33 split. Rebalancing means selling $160 of Bitcoin and buying $160 of gold, which returns you to $960 and $240, or 80/20 again.

The SEC's investor guide describes two common approaches: rebalance on a calendar, such as every six or twelve months, or whenever an asset drifts past a set percentage. Check fees and tax before you trade, because each sale can be a taxable event.

What are the ways to hold Bitcoin and gold together?

Three common routes to a combined Bitcoin and gold position
RouteWhat you buyMain advantageMain drawback
Tokens in your own walletNative BTC plus XAUT or PAXG, or wrapped BTC (such as BTCB) next to gold tokens on one chainFull control and 24/7 tradingKey management, network fees, issuer and wrapper risk
ETFs in a brokerage accountA spot bitcoin ETP plus a gold ETFRegulated securities held through a brokerMarket hours only; you cannot withdraw coins or bars
A multi-asset fundA fund that holds Bitcoin and a gold token alongside other assetsOne purchase, no wallets to manageYou hold fund units; other holdings drive much of the return

If you go the token route, read how gold tokens such as XAUT and PAXG are backed and redeemed, and note that wrapped Bitcoin is an IOU from the wrapper's custodian; our explainer on what BTCB is and the risks of wrapped Bitcoin covers this. Both are examples of tokenized assets that depend on an off-chain party.

What are the risks of combining Bitcoin and gold?

  • Both can fall together: the relationship between the two is not fixed, and a mix only cushions losses when they move differently.
  • Bitcoin drawdowns are severe: even a 10% Bitcoin share loses 7.5% of the sleeve in a 75% crash.
  • Counterparty layers: gold tokens rely on an issuer and vault; wrapped Bitcoin relies on the custodian holding the real BTC.
  • Costs and tax: frequent rebalancing adds trading costs and may realise taxable gains.

Where Wealtii fits: Wealtii has no dedicated Bitcoin-and-gold fund. The Wealtii Tech & Digital Asset Growth Fund holds 8.0% Bitcoin (as BTCB) and 11.8% Tether Gold (XAUT), and the Wealtii Multi-Asset Balanced Allocation Fund holds 7.3% BTCB and 19.1% XAUT (target allocations, 21 Oct 2026); the rest is other crypto and tokenized stocks or ETFs. Weights are fixed targets and automated rebalancing is still in development. You hold fund units and withdraw in USDT. Wealtii is not regulated.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why invest in both Bitcoin and gold?

They play different roles. Bitcoin has a fixed maximum supply of 21 million coins and has produced both large gains and deep losses, while gold has been far less volatile in World Gold Council analysis. Holding both lets gold cushion some of Bitcoin's swings, although both can fall at the same time.

What is a sensible split between Bitcoin and gold?

There is no standard split. BlackRock described 1-2% of a multi-asset portfolio in Bitcoin as a reasonable range for investors who expect wider adoption and can absorb sharp price falls, and World Gold Council analysis found Bitcoin allocations above 2.5% raised portfolio volatility. Size Bitcoin so that a 75% fall would not derail your plans.

Can I hold Bitcoin and tokenized gold in the same wallet?

Only if both exist on the same blockchain. Native Bitcoin lives on the Bitcoin network, so pairing it with Tether Gold in one wallet usually means using a wrapped version such as BTCB on BNB Chain, which adds the risk of the custodian that backs the wrapper.

Does Wealtii offer a Bitcoin and gold fund?

Not a dedicated one. Two Wealtii funds hold Bitcoin (as BTCB) and Tether Gold (XAUT) among other assets: the Growth fund holds 8.0% BTCB and 11.8% XAUT, and the Balanced fund 7.3% BTCB and 19.1% XAUT (target allocations, 21 Oct 2026). Most of each fund is in other crypto and tokenized stocks or ETFs.
