BNB Chain is a blockchain ecosystem whose main network, BNB Smart Chain (BSC), is an EVM-compatible layer-1 blockchain that runs Ethereum-style smart contracts for typical fees under one US cent. BSC uses Proof of Staked Authority consensus with 45 elected validators and, as of October 2026, produces a block about every 0.45 seconds.

This guide explains how BNB Smart Chain works, what its speed and low fees cost in decentralisation, and how it compares with Ethereum. Figures come from BNB Chain's documentation and on-chain data checked on 21 October 2026.

What is BNB Chain?

BNB Chain started life as Binance Smart Chain, whose first block was produced on 29 August 2020. Today the BNB Chain name covers several networks that share the BNB coin:

  • BNB Smart Chain (BSC): the main EVM-compatible layer-1 chain for applications, tokens and DeFi. This is what most people mean by "BNB Chain".
  • opBNB: a layer-2 network built with the OP Stack for cheaper, higher-throughput transactions on top of BSC.
  • BNB Greenfield: a decentralised data-storage network.
  • BNB Beacon Chain: the original staking and governance chain, now retired.

BNB is the native coin used to pay gas on BSC and to stake with validators. For the difference between base networks and the scaling networks built on them, see layer 1 vs layer 2 blockchains.

How does BNB Smart Chain work?

BNB Smart Chain runs the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), so smart contracts written for Ethereum can run on BSC with little or no change. Wallets such as MetaMask and Trust Wallet use the same 0x address format on both networks, and BSC's chain ID is 56. Every transaction pays gas in BNB, validators bundle transactions into blocks, and system contracts on the chain manage staking, validator elections and penalties.

What is a BEP-20 token?

BEP-20 is BNB Smart Chain's token standard, the counterpart of Ethereum's ERC-20. USDT, wrapped assets such as BTCB (Binance-Peg Bitcoin), Tether Gold (XAUT) and Ondo tokenized stocks all exist on BSC as BEP-20 tokens. A BEP-20 token and an ERC-20 token with the same name are different tokens on different chains, so sending one over the wrong network can make the funds hard or impossible to recover.

What is Proof of Staked Authority (PoSA)?

BNB Smart Chain secures itself with Proof of Staked Authority, a mix of proof of stake and proof of authority. BNB holders stake, or delegate, BNB to validators, and the amount staked decides who produces blocks:

  • Every day after 00:00 UTC, the 45 validators with the most stake become active validators.
  • The 21 with the most stake are called Cabinets; the other 24 are Candidates.
  • In each epoch of 1,000 blocks, 18 Cabinets and 3 Candidates form the 21-validator set that produces blocks, with each validator producing 16 blocks in a row per turn.
  • Validators that double-sign or go offline are slashed and lose part of their stake.
  • A fast-finality vote lets validators mark blocks as final quickly instead of waiting for many confirmations.

On 21 October 2026, BSC's validator-set contract reported 45 active validators. For how PoSA compares with other designs, see our overview of blockchain consensus mechanisms.

How fast and cheap is BNB Smart Chain?

BNB Smart Chain has cut its block interval from 3 seconds to 0.45 seconds since April 2025 through three hard forks:

UpgradeMainnet dateBlock interval
Before LorentzUntil April 20253 seconds
Lorentz (BEP-520)29 April 20251.5 seconds
Maxwell (BEP-524)30 June 20250.75 seconds
Fermi (BEP-619)14 January 20260.45 seconds

Measured on-chain, the 1,000,000 blocks up to block 128,873,071 (21 October 2026) averaged 0.45 seconds each. BEP-619 estimated finality of about 1.1 seconds when fast finality works normally, and the Mendel upgrade of 28 April 2026 included a further change to cut fast-finality latency. BNB Chain's website displayed a finality time of 650 milliseconds on 21 October 2026.

Fees are low because gas prices are low. On 21 October 2026, BSC's gas price was 0.05 gwei. A plain BNB transfer uses 21,000 gas, so it cost 0.00000105 BNB, under a tenth of a US cent at a BNB price of about $741 (CoinGecko). BNB Chain's homepage showed an average gas fee of about $0.004 the same day. Fees rise with contract complexity and with the BNB price.

Is BNB Chain secure and decentralised?

BNB Smart Chain trades decentralisation for speed. A block-producing set of 21 validators chosen by stake can coordinate quickly and run high-performance hardware, which makes sub-second blocks possible. The cost is a smaller, more concentrated validator set than Ethereum's and higher barriers to becoming a validator. Our guide to what decentralisation means in practice explains why this matters.

That coordination cuts both ways. In October 2022, an attacker exploited BSC Token Hub, the bridge between BNB Beacon Chain and BSC, and withdrew 2 million BNB. BNB Chain's team contacted validators one by one to suspend the chain while the incident was contained. A chain that can be paused quickly can limit damage, but the episode also showed that a small group can halt the network.

Applications on BSC carry their own risks: smart-contract bugs, copycat tokens that borrow real names, and phishing sites. Check contract addresses on BscScan before you interact with a token or app.

BNB Smart Chain vs Ethereum: what's the difference?

FeatureBNB Smart ChainEthereum
ConsensusProof of Staked Authority: 45 active validators, 21 producing blocks per epochProof of stake with an open, permissionless validator set
Block timeAbout 0.45 seconds (October 2026)12-second slots
Typical feeUnder one US cent for simple transfersVaries with demand; usually higher

Because both chains run the EVM, developers can deploy the same code on either. The practical differences are speed, cost and how many independent parties secure the network.

Why does Wealtii use BNB Smart Chain?

Wealtii runs on BNB Smart Chain end to end. You deposit USDT on BSC (BEP-20) to your personal deposit address, credited after 12 block confirmations, or buy USDT with a card or bank transfer through a third-party on-ramp provider, which charges its own fees and runs its own identity checks. Withdrawals are paid in USDT to an external BEP-20 wallet. Fund holdings such as BTCB, XAUT and Ondo tokenized stocks are BEP-20 tokens held 1:1 in a Gnosis Safe 3-of-3 multi-signature vault, and moving vault funds requires all three signatures. The vault address is public, so anyone can check its holdings on BscScan through Wealtii's transparency page. Network gas fees apply and are typically under $0.50 on BSC.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is BNB Chain the same as Binance?

No. Binance is a cryptocurrency exchange; BNB Chain is a blockchain network. BNB Chain began as Binance Smart Chain and the BNB coin originated with Binance, but blocks on BNB Smart Chain are produced by validators elected by BNB stake, and you do not need a Binance account to use the network.

What is the difference between BEP-20 and ERC-20?

BEP-20 is the token standard on BNB Smart Chain and ERC-20 is the standard on Ethereum. They work almost identically, but tokens on each chain are separate. Always send a token on the network the recipient expects, because a transfer on the wrong network may be difficult or impossible to recover.

How fast are BNB Smart Chain transactions?

Since the Fermi upgrade of 14 January 2026, BNB Smart Chain produces a block about every 0.45 seconds, and on-chain data for October 2026 matches that average. With fast finality, transactions are normally final in about a second or less.

How much does a BNB Smart Chain transaction cost?

On 21 October 2026 the network gas price was 0.05 gwei, so a simple BNB transfer cost about 0.000001 BNB, less than a tenth of a US cent. Smart-contract interactions use more gas and cost more, but typically still well under $0.50.

Which wallet do I need for BNB Smart Chain?

Any EVM-compatible wallet that supports BNB Smart Chain (chain ID 56), such as MetaMask or Trust Wallet, can hold BNB and BEP-20 tokens. You need a small amount of BNB in the wallet to pay gas.
